Junior Secondary

An exciting new focus on Year 7-9 learners

An exciting change is happening in Queensland State Schools and it’s called Junior SecondaryFrom the start of 2013 all secondary schools have been implementing structures which support adolescent learners’ social, academic and wellbeing needs.

Junior Secondary students have specific needs which must be met in order to ensure the best possible learning outcomes for students.  Junior Secondary is based on six important principles:

Quality Teaching + Student Wellbeing + Distinct Identity + Parent and Community Involvement + Leadership + Local Decision Making

Tully

Tully State High School is one of our schools which has taken big steps to ensure these needs are being met for their students.  Some of the changes implemented at Tully include: allocation of school staff to support the agenda; the opening of the Junior Secondary precinct, a designated area for learning and social interaction; the appointment of Junior Secondary leaders and the introduction of the wellbeing program, Positive Education.

Year 7 students will become part of this initiative when this year level moves to secondary school in 2015.  At this time Year 7 will join with Years 8 and 9 in a school grouping which is now referred to as Junior Secondary.

Gordonvale

Gordonvale State High School is Far North Queensland’s Junior Secondary pilot school and staff are working hard preparing to welcome the first group of Year 7s at the commencement of the 2014 school year.  These students can look forward to a restructure of the traditional secondary timetable, experienced Year 7 teachers who have elected to join Gordonvale’s team, Individual Learning Projects, a new Junior Secondary uniform and a purpose-built Junior Secondary building.

For more information on enrolment opportunities at Gordonvale State High School, please contact the Principal, Jan Carr, on 4043 3222.
