Five ways that you can help your child

World-wide research proves that being able to read well is important for success in all areas of schooling. Here are five ways that you can help your child become a great reader.

  1. Read something with your child every day. (See 10 reasons why you should.)
  2. Talk about your own favourite books, magazines or websites.
  3. Make sure that your child has access to lots of reading material – join a local library, share books with friends, find some great websites.
  4. Encourage your child to read lots of different kinds of texts.
  5. Discuss what you read together. What did you like? What did you learn?

Remember, parents are every child’s first teacher. Show your child how much reading means to you!
